What you need to know about smoke damper?

Overview: Smoke damper is used for quick detection, controlled closure devices, heat activated to make the damper close in the event of a fire. Smoke damper works on the principle of detector it means during testing when smoke is detected (via smoke detector), or if power failure occurs, the damper will close and remain closed. When the smoke signal ceases (smoke detector reset), the test is completed or power is restored the damper will automatically reset to the open position. The damper automatically resets if nuisance alarms occur and the system is reset.

Smoke dampers resist the passage of air and smoke within the ductwork. These smoke dampers are typically operated by a smoke detector which is situated in the duct. Once smoke has been detected, the smoke detector sends a signal to the dampers actuator, which uses the jackshaft and linkage to open and close the blades of the smoke damper.

Smoke dampers are designed for the application in ventilation and air conditioning systems where the air way is normally clean and the temperature and humidity are controlled.

These smoke dampers are mainly designed and installed in the ductwork and the transfer of air openings prevents the passage of smoke between the sections. A smoke damper works when smoke is detected by a smoke detector that is located in the ductwork as well. These detectors are usually wired to a central alarm panel where an alarm will send a signal to an actuator attached to the smoke damper. In the damper actuator can be located externally or internally and is operated either electrically or pneumatically. The actuator uses the jack-shaft and linkage to open and close the blades of the smoke damper.

Before selecting a fire damper it is must to select the lowest leakage class damper, however there are some of the smoke control applications where a higher leakage class damper is acceptable. Always consult with your local building codes for specific application requirements. The leakage rating for a smoke fire damper comes from the UL555S Leakage Test.

When a smoke fire damper is installed it should be fit in a space with room for wiring or piping and the actuator & accessories must be accessible for testing and service or replacement.
